Hi,
Posted this on KX riders also.
I was wondering if there's a difference with the rear shock mounting on the frame between my 1988 500 and the 1998 ?
There is a guy local selling loads of parts from a 1998 bike and I'm thinking of buying some of his parts.
If I was to buy the swing arm the linkage and the shock would it fit my bike or is the top shock mount different and not allow the 98 shock to be fitted
I've already purchased the forks and tripple clamps for my bike.

I caught that and replied the following:
It just so happens that I have a 88 frame and a newer swing arm with linkage that I could try it on.
I believe that you can use the 88 frame but you would need to use all the newer suspension from the 98, not just a shock.
IE swing arm, linkage, rear brake caliper and mount, shock, and possibly sub frame.
The 88 k5 shock has a single mounting post whereas the 89-04 k5 used the H shaped clevis.
More tomorrow.
In the pic I used a 96 frame.
I will pull the 88 and swap everything over.

Re: Difference in frame shock mounting
Ok, here is a 1988 KX500 frame, 96-02 swingarm, 91-02 sub frame, 96-03 rear caliper caliper, 96-04 Rear caliper mount, 90-04 shock brackets, 90-04 shock /swingarm linkage Uni trak... Whatever
So far the only difference I have found it the upper sub frame bolt.
On the 1988 it is a lot smaller thread size then on the 96.
1988
1996
Bad pic but you can clearly see the thread size difference

I don't see why you couldn't use a 88 KX125, KX250, KX500 sub frame.
