Here is some info about reed petal tension.

Low tension insure instant throttle response..
Intermediate tension increase mid-range responsiveness and pull..
High tension tension provides reed stability for improved high RPM operation..

I have never been able to run a KX500 up to a RPM where the reeds caused any issues being ran at the low tension setting.
Every pipe, carb, port timing, compression, ignition timing I have ran on the dyno all showed more performance while the petals were in the low tension setting.
All my personal KX500's have VF2s and are being ran in the low tension setting. :ugeek:
If bikes are for kids I'll never grow up.
