KX Guru Racing JT Engine Works KX500 Induction Crank testing

Post by Sandblaster » Wed May 16, 2018 12:23 am

I know, I know... Turbo Cranks have been out for 40 years and they don't work and are a waste of time and money... Except.... We have a Steve Paris Turbo Crank up and running in "Project Clapped out 1998 KX250... what works?" and have shown a 15-20% gain on a broad range of RPM's  :o  We have more testing to do but so far I'm really excited about this.
So much so that I'm going to duplicate the experiments on my KX500..

Steve Paris is the only person to have a Patent on the Turbo Crank idea.
He contacted me about 2 years ago and we talked a bit about how it works, and why it works when so many others did not.
Steve's design acts like a compressor, not a sweeper... Most of the designs I have seen try to fan or sweep the charge up the transfers.
Steve's design compresses the charge and then directs it up the transfers.
I gave it many, many nights of thought as to why it would work when others failed.
I came to a conclusion that the only way it could work was that the cases had to be modified as well as the crank.
So I called Steve and sure enough.... I was right. Yes, sometimes I get lucky.

Here we are, the test bed.
This is my 01 KX500 Supermoto that has had a fair amount of riding done on it.
I hadn't ran it in about a year and a half.
In fact, I think Oscar Cota was the last to ride it down at his place in So Cal when we were putting Sean Colliers bike together..
We robbed a bunch of parts off it for Sean's bike and I just haven't had the time to get it all back up and running.

While I was putting it back together I installed some Myler radiators which are high quality and made in the USA.
I mixed up some new 92 Methanol free gas with Motul 800 at 50:1.
Then Jason took it for a test ride to make sure nothing happened while the bike was in storage.

She still runs great.
I was a bit shocked to see that the cylinder pressure was at 145lb before we ran it.
We will test it again right after the first series of dyno pulls.
Then, we will test it again before and after our next series of dyno pulls.
If the Turbo Crank mods work like they did on the 250 we should see somewhere from 10-30psi increased pressure.
And from there I have a whole series of case mods to try and will continue to make some additional mods to the cylinder, head, and pipe, to see what all we can get out of it within reason... I still want to be able to ride it lol...
The goal is not to build another drag bike.
I don't want anyone to be able to beat Jeff Grawbarger
I want a good series of proven mods that Jason can offer for reasonable established prices.
HP = $ :shock:
But more then anything, I just want to know and make my own bikes incredible to ride.
If bikes are for kids I'll never grow up.

Here is the plan.
Jason and I will tear the engine down and clean the parts of the bottom end...
The top end will be rinsed off and the top of the piston cleaned.
We will not be cleaning the exhaust valves other then rinsing them off.
We will not replace any bearings, or seals.
We will replace at least the base gasket but not much more.
If bikes are for kids I'll never grow up.

48 RWHP.
For a worn out top end that's about what you would expect from a completely stock KX500.
If the engine was completely fresh you can expect 52-55 RWHP from what others have told me.
Some people will want to point out that Kawasaki claimed 63HP but that is Crank HP.
You will loose a bit through your clutch, transmission, chain, sprockets, and rear tire.
So, I don't care about what it is at the crank.
I want to know what my tire is transferring to the ground 8-)

Got it home from the dyno about 3pm and started disassembly.

One of the few after market parts is a Power Dynamo ignition system so we need to be careful and use the same settings.

The top end is actually pretty clean considering it's age.

The exhaust valves operate smoothly but could use a good cleaning and adjustment, but, we are not going to clean, adjust, or replace anything.
