1993 k5 won’t idle

Post by 44special » Sat Aug 15, 2020 4:13 pm

Ok, at my wits end  trying to get this bike to idle. Engine has 165lbs compression, rad valve with good reeds and new carb boot. Carb is a 38mm airstriker #7 slide n82m needle 158 main as I’m at 5400’. The jet block o ring has been replaced and I even bought the factory fuel level gauge! ( fuel level was 6mm too high by the way) I’ve tried everything from 58 to 30 pilot jets and nothing affects how the air screw and idle screw have no affect on making the bike idle. It’s almost like there is no idle circuit. I have completely cleaned the carb to include using guitar strings to ensure all passages are open. What am I missing?

Seems like you covered just about everything.
If you want, send me the body and jet block with no other parts.
Remove the jet block, keep the gasket there.
Let me clean and inspect it for you.

Or, buy a quad vent air Striker from ebay for about 30 bucks and give it try.

Thanks for the reply sandblaster, I think I’ll try ordering one of those carbs and if it works, I’ll contact you to check out my genuine keihin for me!
Or I’ll get that lectron I’ve been eyeing ....😆

Ok, sounds good.
I would not plan on running that 30 dollar carb for long but it is a cheap test.

Ok, installed my new no name airstriker today after cleaning it and installing genuine keihin jets and using my slide and needle. Idles now, but ONLY with the choke on. I have the biggest pilot jet I have in it(58) and idle speed screw in all the way in. Air screw still has no effect. So now what could be the issue? Could the timing of the engine affect this?

Where is your pilot screw at?

Started at 2.5 out and went in. Doesn’t seem to affect anything, engine just slows down and dies.

So, I came up with a solution to this issue :D
The bike would just die like it was idling too slow and my idle speed screw was all the way in, so I put a longer screw on and now I have enough adjustment to make it idle. Seems odd to have to put in a longer screw for more additional adjustment, but I guess each bike is got it’s own quirks
