Still trying to sort out my dates. but my grandfather. was on both the Uss Neches and USS sperry (on mothers side). my other grandfather was on the colorado, etc...

but back to the topic.

the Neches... he showed up 1 day late to peral harbor (roughly, would have to look it up). but he still had nightmares of picking all the bodys out of the water...

few days out of perl. the Neches got torpedoed;'. first round was a dud. and hit the ship. you guessed it. right RIGHT near his sleeping quarters. he being a light sleeper got up and out. the 2nd torpedo wasnt a dud...................... lost his scense of smell that night, due to all the diesel oil in the water (diesel doesnt do good things to the sinus's)....

so... on to the sperry.. (ship after the neches)..

both were sub tenders.....................

well. the knife is made from the handle of one german sub's periscopes they "tended" to... durring the war.

still tracking down which sub etc. I know the answer is out there.

That is a cool story.
Did Grandpa make the knife?
My Grandpa was a Marine Sargent in WWII.
He wanted to be a pilot but his vision was not good enough.
So, they made him a band leader and never saw action.
Yeah he was a musician and played a mean trumpet :)

Grandpa was a Baker.

Yes He made the knife. amazing considering his MASSIVE lack of mechanical skills. (with metal, or automotive, etc). he was amazing with wood work............

I shot a mark III last weekend and was shocked at how much the quality has dropped.
I'll keep my Mark II
I have the same gun in blue finish.. AND also have the same gun with the 5" BBL target version (bull barrel)..
